Hoarfrost

Hoarfrost

Old man winter is just around the corner! Hoarfrost, named for an old English word referring to the grey hair earned by age, likewise sneaks up in the cold of night. Frost is to dew as snowflakes are to raindrops, and when water vapor in the air condenses directly into ice it is frost. Occasionally, if luck will have it, the frost will build up on itself, forming delicate fine hairs of ice that create lacy sculptures like this fine example from Illinois. Inspired The Hoarfrost poster was inspired by Bee.Herder's great photo on Instagram.
