Weather Summary

Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, July 05, 2008.

Low pressure over Mexico will trigger stormy conditions over most of Mexico on Saturday. An area of low pressure over the Pacific Ocean near southern Mexico will contribute to the thunderstorms and heavy rainfall over southern Mexico and Guatemala, and has the potential to develop into a tropical cyclone. A tropical wave moving through Central America will produce strong thunderstorms and heavy rain over the region throughout the day, as well as create stormy ocean conditions off of both coasts. Tropical Depression Douglas is located south of Baja California and will linger in the area, while Tropical Storm Boris is located well off of the coast of Mexico, and will move westward. Meanwhile, the Greater Antilles will see showers and storms due to a second tropical wave moving through the Caribbean south of Hispaniola. A low pressure system associated with the tropical wave has the slight potential to develop into a tropical depression, although conditions are not particularly favorable. The Lesser Antilles will also see a few showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. Tropical Storm Bertha will begin to approach the Caribbean on Saturday, but will not be located near any land yet.

A pair of tropical waves, one moving over Venezuela and one moving over Suriname, will trigger thunderstorms and heavy rainfall over northern South America on Saturday. Eastern Brazil can expect a few coastal showers, while a weak trough over Uruguay and Argentina will produce clouds and possibly some light rain across the region. Onshore flow from a high pressure system will produce showers and thunderstorms along the coast of Chile and over southern Argentina.

Dr. Jeff Masters' WunderBlog:

Bertha may pose a long-range threat to the U.S.

Dr. Jeff Masters

Tropical Storm Bertha has maintained it's strength overnight, but is having trouble with Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) of 25°C--one degree below the threshold of 26°C considered beneficial for tropical storms. This morning's QuikSCAT pass missed Bertha, but last night's pass confirmed winds of at least 40mph. Satellite estimates of Bertha's strength have consistently put the storm's strength at 50 mph over the past day. The storm is under about 10-15 knots of win...

Weather History:

Did you know that...

On this date in 1998, a tropical weather system in the Caribbean Sea and its potentially tremendous rainfall were a possibly welcomed idea to the 110,000 Floridians still evacuated from their homes due to wildfires.
