SPECIAL TOURIST/VISITOR ALERT

THERE HAS BEEN A HUGE INCREASE IN AGGRESSIVE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY 11 IN SOUTH KONA AND KA'U NOW RESULTING IN A FATALITY RECENTLY
. I call this highway the "Ho Chi Minh Trail" as one never knows if one will get home alive after driving on it.

Be very alert to oncoming traffic and aggressive vehicle passing on this road. This road is DANGEROUS: very curvy, badly paved and no guard rails, especially treacherous when raining or wet. There are also a lot of drunk drivers on this road especially at night. Unfortunately, it is the only direct road to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from the resorts in Kauila-Kona and Kohala. Once pass the South Kona District is the only road in and out.

Many WU members have expressed their love for their corner of the world. My home, Northern California, is my paradise.

Northern California is rich in geographic, geological, climate and human diversity. Since prehistoric times, the Gold Rush era in the 19th century to the present, people from all over the world have migrated to Northern California in search of a dream for a better life. From the mild mediterranean coast to the alpine mountains there is an array of natural and manmade wonders (all accessible within a four hour drive on one of the planet's most advanced highway systems.) Brilliant, abundant sunshine illuminates the way for most of the year across multiple microclimates.

Visionaries from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries have preserved vast areas of old growth redwoods (that were seedlings around the time of Christ,) coastlines, undeveloped hillsides and countryside. Other visionaries have and continue to work for equal rights and respect for all of Northern California's people.

Thank you for sharing your neighborhoods and welcome to mine!

Don't know how far the news is going about this fire. It has moved off to a remote area to the east and no longer threatens Clearlake but it's too late for Lower Lake. 175 structures burned. A local man has been arrested and charged with 17 counts of arson. He is believed to be responsible for several fires over the past year including this one. This is called the Clayton fire. Thanks to all for their concern. I don't want to ge in the way so when things settle down I'll try to get some photos.

United's 4-hour flight to nowhere

United flight 1111 from San Francisco to Lihue, Kauai on Tuesday, Feb 7: a four hour loopdy loop (Image: FlightAware)

To make it to Kauai safely (2,540 miles away), a Boeing 757 is loaded down with a LOT of very heavy fuel. It's so heavy in fact, that the plane cannot land with that much fuel onboard....

However, a Boeing 757 is not able to dump fuel, according to my aviation geek buddies with whom I had a Twitter chat about this.

So... this meant that pilots had to fly the plane in circles for four hours off the coast to burn off fuel and lighten up before returning to SFO for a safe landing at 1 pm.

At least it was a 757 with much more extra fuel on board.

ycd, I can't really think of anything to 'avoid' except for my hood, lol! All the beaches are beautiful, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is wonderful and Mauna Kea is also. There is a book called Big Island Revealed that is a tourist "Bible" that is a very good read to find all the interesting places and things to do here. Although, some suggestions involve trespassing on private property which isn't advised. They can buy it on Amazon prior to coming or it's for sale in most of the stores here. The resorts and restaurants are world class. Local farmers markets are great. The people here by and large are very gracious and friendly. But it helps if you pull off to the side when it's safe to do so to let faster traffic pass you on the two lane roads. Locals often have to drive long distances to get to their jobs. They don't call it the Big Island for nothing.

I think the other islands have similar guide books. It's very much laid back and calm on this island which is mostly rural with two towns, Kailua-Kona and Hilo on the dry and wet sides of the island. There are a string of villages around the island with 5 beautiful volcanoes rising above them. The ocean is a spectacular blue. Flowers blooming everywhere are wonderful. Weather is warm and comfortable. The water at the beaches is clear and in a 70s-80s range depending on the time of year. One needs to be very aware of ocean conditions here though as the ocean currents are very strong in places after traveling thousands of miles over open seas. The Hawaiian islands are the most physically remote places on the planet.

Yes, it's an amazing sight, Barb. I'm awaiting a "new" used Sony HX100v and was planning today to go over and try and see it. But the first camera to arrive had a defective display and had to return it. Also, the appointment that would have taken me over to Hilo was cancelled. Maybe attempt another try sooner than later. ‘Firehose’ lava stream exploding into ocean in Hawaii
The vast Kilauea flow is gushing from a tube that was exposed when a 26-acre lava delta collapsed into the ocean at the site on New Year’s Eve
The Guardian, Associated Press in Honolulu, Wednesday 1 February 2017 23.25 GMT
A dramatic “firehose” stream of molten lava continued to shoot out of a sea cliff Wednesday in Hawaii, splashing into the Pacific Ocean below and exploding upon impact.
The enormous Kilauea flow is coming from a lava tube at the Kamokuna ocean entry on the south-east side of the Big Island. The lava is gushing from a tube that was exposed when a 26-acre lava delta collapsed into the ocean at the site on New Year’s Eve. The collapse of the newly formed land triggered huge explosions and giant waves in the area. ...

Rangers Seeking Witnesses to Fatal Hwy 11 Accident

The accident caused a complete closure of Highway 11 between mile markers 32 and 34 for several hours Saturday afternoon while officials investigated the scene. Both lanes of the highway were open by 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

There was also another really bad accident yesterday right at Honokohau Harbor in Kona HWY 11 S bound closed for many hours. Please provide us some information on this as well. -- commenter

I hear you calpoppy. Not sure if I will be able to survive this myself. May have to go back to California out of a sheer will to live. That being California is able to stand alone on at least providing health care. Don't think I stand much of a chance of getting into Canada under current law.

Being that Hawaii is pretty much a US Federal dependency and a military occupation of the Kingdom of Hawaii not much hope here if it all goes south.

I am hoping that Obama's pulling the plug on Arctic drilling will remain after the Orange Voldemort has taken over! The world seems to be spinning back into time, and I want it to stop! I know I have at least 2017 for my health insurance which is Obamacare. That they have said, but after, well I only have 10 months of 2018 to go without insurance, then Medicare if that is still here:((

After my son and several other Coast Guard air crews risked their lives to save the crew members of the Shell Arctic drilling platform from their disaster in the Arctic I am really hoping Voldemort can't do a thing!!!

I hope the German electorate are not as gullible as the American ones are to the propaganda spewing Corporate Media. And perhaps the German media are not as much tools of the 1%. I don't know what the dynamics are there, Barb. But I would hope that lessons were learned after dealing with the fascism of the Nazi Party during the 1930's and 1940's.

Never in my wildest did I think I'd be rooting for a German conservative centrist!! Lol! Ahhh, Mein Chancellor too, Mutter Merkel.

Glad to hear the authorities have a good lead on who this probable terrorist is and are in pursuit.

I also wish the terrorists in the West who started this unending cycle of violence would be served their Karmic justice also one of these days.

Still a slight thought in the back of my head, too, Mike. Although ISIS has formally claimed responsibility (without any prooving details): the villain is still at large, and so far nothing is known about him, at least in the public.

Edit a day later: Okay, the more informations are coming about about the latest suspect from Tunisia the more likely it is that they are now chasing the right jihadi criminal.

An offshore oil drilling rig in Port Angeles, Wash., that had been slated for use in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska's northwest coast. (Daniella Beccaria / Associated Press)

-- Obama will use his executive authority to impose new permanent bans on offshore drilling

The announcement on Tuesday, which also includes large parts of the Atlantic, from New England to the South, comes a month after the administration said it would not sell new leases for drilling in the Arctic and Atlantic through 2022. That announcement also blocked expansion in the Pacific, leaving the Gulf of Mexico as the primary offshore production area.

New semi-slug spreading rat lungworm disease

In the United States, the potentially life-threatening tropical disease is most prevalent in East Hawaii, particularly Puna. People typically become infected by eating food or drinking water that contains the parasitic nematode angiostrongylus cantonensis. The parasite attacks the brain and nervous system; in some cases, rat lungworm disease can lead to a coma and even death.

Yes, almost 3 inches, Barb, in a 24 hour period. All of which just ran over the side of my catchment tank, doh! as you would say, lol. I just paid to have the tank filled up a couple of weeks of ago. So sick of this catchment water I could puke. And would literally if I didn't treat it.

Very sorry to hear about Berlin. Hopefully, it won't hurt Merkel's election chances and send Germany also "south". If that happened in the US I would be questioning whether it was a "false flag" event.

California governor seeks permanent ban on offshore drilling

"California is blessed with hundreds of miles of spectacular coastline, home to scenic state parks, beautiful beaches, abundant wildlife and thriving communities," Brown wrote to Obama. "Clearly, large new oil and gas reserves would be inconsistent with our overriding imperative to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and combat the devastating impacts of climate change."

The invasive grasses are already returning,Sandi. My big koa tree that was only 2 feet tall when I planted it 8 years ago and is now 20 feet tall has "fluffed" up nicely and has little blooms already. It was looking raggedy after two months without rain.

Calpoppy, I paid $200 to have my water tank filled several days before this deluge came out of nowhere. Some of the water delivery companies were up to a month backlogged. I watched all the free rainwater just run over the tank, ugh. But I did get 6 months of free water from the unusual storms last spring and summer. I've never seen a rainbow at Rainbow Falls either lol!
