Same procedure as every year, fortunately: street carnival is dominating life in the alleys of Mainz on Rhine once again. Here some photos I took this afternoon on a square near my flat, and they may introduce to you a characteristic just of our local carnival: the "Schwellkopp", means "swollen head". Today I enjoyed a little walk along the banks of Rhine River in Mainz to have a look at its current remarkable low water. Some folks may remember that it had been this way in autumn 2015 as well. But in January a gauge like this is even more rare as usually precipitation in the months of the late year should have had compensated an earlier lack of rain. However, due to persistent high pressure December 2016 had been record dry in parts of central E...

Mainz had been mostly grey and foggy this December. Photo below is from one of the few clear days this months. Hopefully the world with its current grey and dark places would see some more light soon, too!
