Happy Valley, Oregon Weather: January 2017

By: BelmontJeff , 5:36 PM GMT on February 03, 2017

PRECIPITATION: The big story was the surprise heavy snowfall on the 10th-11th. Predictions were for only 1-4” but we received 10” here in Happy Valley as an earlier rain on the 10th quickly changed to snow in the early evening as temperatures dropped and wet snow began to fall heavily as the storm moved directly over the Portland area, becoming compact and stronger than expected. This resulted in an extended period of snowfall into the morning of the 11th. The heavy, wet accumulation on trees and bushes caused many branches and even whole trees to come down resulting in numerous power outages throughout the region. Cold weather followed the storm causing the deep snow cover to remain through the 18th when a cold, heavy rain quickly washed it all away. In all, the month had 10 days with a snow cover ≥1”, 7 of these being ≥6”; there were 4 days of accumulating snowfall (≥0.1”) and 6 days with a Trace or more. Additionally, there were 3 days with Freezing Rain and 1 day seeing Sleet. This was the 4th consecutive month with total precipitation exceeding 5 inches.

I find that odd too--I thought ThreadEx was a compilation of all records for a city. Comprehensive. I wonder how many sub-60 record highs Portland has when the older data are included.

I just checked the ACIS database and it looks like the long-term record for the downtown Portland official locations still contains 4 sub-60 record Max. Temps in January and 3 in December. The coolest record Max? 58 on Jan. 8th and 14th. Additionally, there are still 7 days that have records of exactly 60 (4 in January and 3 in December). The Temperature period of record for Portland dates back to 6/14/1874.

Jeff, I used ThreadEx, which has only 9 record highs still in the 60s in January for Baltimore. February has just 3 left. December has 7 left. I looked at Portland Oregon record highs under 60--counted 27, but check on that :) That was more than I expected.

Brian, the Threadex is good because it combines the Custom House and BWI for the long-term record for the City. I'll have to check Portland to see if it combines the historical Downtown locations and the airport records into a single historical record (and what the date was when that happened).
The ACIS database, which I think I previously sent you, gives the full historical data for each stations' period of record.

OK, so I just checked Portland's ThreadEx data and it only goes back to 10/13/1940 (about the time the airport data began) - not sure why they haven't combined the historical data prior to that time (downtown dates back to 1872), which is the whole point of ThreadEx. When I have time I'll write to NWS-Portland to find out why.

8 degrees is a big margin, but the majority of our record highs in January and February are in the 70s. 64 was our coolest record high by 2 degrees, so it was easier to break.

Brian, I was just checking BWI's records and was surprised to see that 15 days of Max. Temp. records in January are still in the 60s, the coolest being 64° (9th and 21st). I see the the overall coolest record Max. Temp. is Dec. 19th with 61°. All other records are 65° or higher. Of course, the longer-term record for the Custom House (prior to BWI in 8/1950) could supersede BWI's records, though its thermometer was on the roof so . . . .

Our record high of 64 was broken by 8 degrees today. February 7th's record was the lowest record high we had. We have a few record highs of 66, none at 65.

Amazingly warm weather you've been having(!) but it is soon coming to an end. Breaking a long-standing record by 8 degrees is amazing. I saw that BWI only made it down to 56° this morning, which would be an all-time warm Minimum Temperature for February (record currently is 55) for the airport but it looks like it'll fall below that before midnight.
