Coastal Flood Warning, High Surf Advisory, Beach Hazard Statement
Issued: 2:10 PM EDT Sep. 19, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until midnight EDT tonight...
... High surf advisory remains in effect until 7 PM EDT this evening...
... Beach hazards statement remains in effect until 8 PM EDT this evening...

* location... Virginia Beach and Outer Banks Currituck locations adjacent to
the Atlantic Ocean... Chesapeake Bay and tidal tributaries.

* Timing... for tidal flooding... expect moderate flooding within 2 hours either
side of the high tide cycle late this evening. Additional minor flooding is
expected with the following high tide cycle Wednesday morning. The most
likely time for strong rip currents is a couple hours on either side of low
tide. High surf advisory now continues through early this evening.

* Coastal flood impacts... widespread flooding of vulnerable areas will result
in an elevated threat of property damage to homes and businesses near the
Waterfront and shoreline. Water will be 2 to 3 feet deep in some areas
resulting in a sufficient depth to close numerous roads and threaten homes
and businesses. Flooding will extend inland from the Waterfront along tidal
rivers and bays resulting in some Road closures and flooding of vehicles.

* Shoreline impacts... breaking waves will result in beach erosion with some
minor damage possible to dune structures.

* Surf or rip current risk... nearshore large breaking waves of 8 to 11 ft will
result in dangerous surf conditions and a high risk of rip currents. Do not
enter or approach the water due to the risk of being swept away.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A coastal Flood Warning means that flooding is occurring or imminent. Coastal
residents in the warned area should be alert for rising water... and take
appropriate action to protect life and property. Be prepared for the
possibility of Road closures and flooding of properties. If travel is
necessary... do not attempt to drive through water of unknown depth.

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in the advisory
area... producing localized beach erosion and dangerous swimming conditions.

A beach hazards statement is issued when threats such as rip currents...
longshore currents... sneaker waves and other hazards create life-threatening
conditions in the surf zone. Caution should be used when in or near the water.
