Watches & Warnings

Special Statement
Issued: 8:01 AM EST Dec. 12, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Snow showers starting to pick up across the area...

Scattered to numerous snow showers can be expected during the
morning - possibly briefly heavy. Scattered snow showers will
linger through late afternoon in locations closer to the VA and WV
border. Overall snow accumulations will be light, with
accumulations in most locations a dusting to a half inch. A few
places that receive multiple heavier snow showers and some
Ridgetop locations near the VA border could receive locally as
much as one inch of accumulation. The additional snow showers
during the day combined with slowly falling temperatures could
lead to some slick spots late in the afternoon and into the
evening, especially on untreated roadways, ridgetops, elevated
surfaces, and bridges. Also, gusty winds today could result in
quickly changing visibilities in snow showers and squalls.

Use caution when driving through the day and into the evening,
especially on untreated roadways, elevated surfaces, and bridges.
Slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination safely.

... Show showers and mixed precipitation to affect the area
today...

A cold front will push through the region early this morning
bringing gusty winds and moisture to eastern Kentucky during the
predawn hours. A light mix of patchy snow, sprinkles, and drizzle
is expected to develop between 5 and 8 am EST. With Road
temperatures well above freezing this morning after a mild day on
Monday, the snow is expected to melt on contact and have little
impact on most roads through dawn. However, as colder air moves
into the area, the precipitation will transition to all snow
between 7 am and 10 am EST. With a few spots falling below
freezing by late in the morning some pockets of freezing
precipitation will be possible with slick spots a concern, though
the vast amount of the area will stay ice free.

Scattered to numerous snow showers are then expected during the
morning - possibly briefly heavy. Scattered snow showers will
