... On this date in weather history...

In 1987, severe thunderstorms evolving into a derecho
produced destructive winds from Minnesota to Indiana.
Gusts roared at 104 mph in Janesville Wisconsin that
flipped over 2 aircraft and blew a third aircraft 300
feet down the runway.

In 2009, a historic heat wave that hit the Pacific
northwest like a 100 foot rogue wave reached a peak.
Portland melted in 100 plus degree heat for 3 straight
days with highs of 103 degrees on the 27th and 106 on the
28th and 29th.All were record highs for the dates in
question. Seattle was turned into a sauna when the
Mercury soared to an all time high of 103 degrees. It
was only the second time the Emerald City had reached 100
degrees. The first, an even 100 degrees, occurred on
July 20th, 1994. Since most homes did not have air
conditioning, such heat certainly gave new meaning to
"sleepless in seattle".
